On June 20, 2021, the Mikhailovskaya Battery square hosted the VIII Grand Sevastopol Charity Officers’ Ball “Symphony of the Future”. This year the ball marks two anniversaries: the 325th anniversary of the Russian Navy and the 115th anniversary of Dmitri Shostakovich.

One thousand guests from different cities of Crimea and Russia participated in the event. They got to the ball by sea from the heart of Sevastopol, Grafskaya Quay, to the music of a military brass band. The monumental frigate “Chersonesus” , one of the six biggest sailing vessels in Russia, welcomed the guests with its scarlet sails at the roadstead of Sevastopol Bay.

The Ball traditionally held the unique Military Ballroom Parade, a solemn greeting ceremony of military and civil societies shaped in the stylistics of ballroom dancing. The plot featured a girl Raya who created a new symphony – the Symphony of the Future. Dmitri Shostakovich, a man of genious, a man of innovation, free and brave, gives her a magic flower that makes her dream come true and calls the great composers.

Like in a children’s game the symphony is created step by step, waltz by waltz, galloping across Europe with Peter the Great, with the support of Tchaikovsky, Strauss, Mozart, Rimsky-Korsakov, Orpheus and Bard, the poet of ballads. The guests witness a city of future and fairy-tale garden of harmony. The Ball unfolded fairy-tale pictures where people teamed up with the Living Flower, the beautiful Spring and Snowflakes, the Squirrel from Buyan Island, the brave Nutcracker and devoted Mary, snow-white winged Pegasus, Scheherazade, the Blue Bird of Happiness, folklore Lel, the Soldier and the Ballerina; the picture where Catherine the Great leads a tour of the fantastic city of the future and where “our neighbor” Onegin settled in the newly created “Cheryomushky” designed by Shostakovich. The apotheosis was the performance of the Symphony of the Future, "written" by the collective author – all the participants of the ball and the characters of the Ballroom Parade.

The Ball musical programme this year has become especially powerful. It brought together the world famous compositions of Shostakovich, Rimsky-Korsakov, Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Puccini, Verdi, Chopin, Strauss, Donizetti, Verdi, Delibes, Hopkins, Dvorak and many other brilliant authors. In the open air of the Mikhailovskaya Battery, great arias were performed by brilliant singers: the soloist of the Helikon-Opera Musical Theater Vitaly Serebryakov, the soloists of the Crimean State Philharmonic Dinara Khafizova and Dmitry Kostenko, the St. Petersburg singer Slavyana, Sevastopol vocalists Pyotr Smekodub and Artyom Fedorov.

The musical accompaniment of the Ball was created by the Academic Symphony Orchestra of the Crimean State Philharmonic under the direction of maestro Alexander Dolinsky and the Military Brass Orchestra of the 127th separate intelligence brigade of the Black Sea Fleet under the direction of the military conductor, Major Oleg Palienko.

The choreographic incarnation of the Ballroom Parade characters was created by the soloists of the state ensemble “The Black Sea” Sergey Khrapin and Yana Kolmogorova, ensemble of the classic dance “Nadezhda” and its director and choreographer Yelena Olkhovskaya, a bright dancer Alexander Starodubtsev, a pantomime actor Vladimir Mashkovich and accordionist Alexey Batsyura. Vitaly Omelchenko , the actor of the Sevastopol Academic Russian Drama Theater named after A.V. Lunacharsky, was the conferencier of the evening.

«Dear guests of the VII Grand Sevastopol Charity Officers' Ball «Victory»! I congratulate you with this long-awaited beautiful event! It is natural and symbolic that it is in Sevastopol, the hero-city of Russian  glory, that  this noble tradition of Russian balls is being revived. The Officers’ Ball has become one of the hallmarks of Sevastopol . Annually the number of participants increases, the Ball acquires new traditions. It is especially important that this year the Ball is dedicated to the Victory of our people in the Great Patriotic War. The military and civilian couples, like our valiant defenders of Motherland, get together in a dance. The dance in the Great Patriotic War was not just a dance — it was a means of survival. Special front-line concert brigades were created to maintain the spirit of the soldiers. Ordinary city residents during the war also did not stop dancing. And by way of  dancing they expressed all their emotions, all their feelings!

I wish all participants of the VII Grand Sevastopol Officers' Ball preserve traditions and history of our great country — Russia! Let this event become the crown jewel of this year, this autumn, the 75th anniversary of Victory and the 180th anniversary of Pyotr Tchaikovsky».

«The tradition of this splendid feat was founded seven years ago. Annually it hosts hundreds of guests from all-over Russia and from foreign states. Today the Sevastopol Officers' Ball is rightfully considered one of the most large-scale cultural events in Crimea reflecting the continuity of generations and eras. The choice of venue is not accidental. Historically Crimea has been of particular importance to Russia. Sevastopol is the symbol of Russian Fleet, officer’s honour, courage and heroism of our soldiers. Today, with the support of the state corporation Rostec, large-scale projects in the field of transport, energy, and social sphere are being implemented here.

This year the Ball is dedicated to the 75th anniversary of Victory and  the Day of the hero-city of Sevastopol. We celebrate the 180th anniversary of Pyotr Tchaikovsky and his music will become the jewel of the ball. Such events, undoubtedly,  develop not only the sense of beauty, but help preserve common historical, spiritual and moral values.
